CIRCLE
(4x4 dimensional lumber, exterior latex paint, rebar, 16d nail, string line, solar flood lights)
Circle was a site-specific installation built for the inaugural Desert Biennial Project- Gravity on the Jean Dry Lake Bed in southern Nevada. It references in both material and form, the ubiquitous mascot of urban desert sprawl- the cookie cutter cul-de-sac. Rapid encroachment, shifting urban growth boundaries, water reallocation- despite these actions suggesting the desert being an empty void, it is in fact a fragile, finite ecosystem.
While development seems to happen almost overnight, ecological and geologic time march on at an imperceptible rate.
Using common residential construction materials, Circle aims to demonstrate the passage of time through perceptual shifts in light over the course of a day. Rendering time palpable, Circle asks how we can live in greater service to the infinite?
